What is Acupuncture Therapy?
Acupuncture is a method of healing where tiny, sterile needles are gently placed into the skin at certain points. People use it to help ease pain and support overall health. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the idea is that these needles help unblock the body’s energy and bring things back into balance. The points used are found along lines called meridians, which are believed to guide energy through the body.
How it works
A practitioner inserts 5–20 very thin stainless-steel needles into specific points based on your symptoms and history. Insertion usually causes little to no discomfort; you may feel mild aching or tingling, which signals the right depth. Needles stay in for about 30 minutes and may be gently manipulated.
What it’s used for
- Pain: Chronic pain, headaches, back pain, sciatica
- Musculoskeletal issues: Injuries, trauma, carpal tunnel, osteoarthritis
- Other conditions: Nausea (including post-surgery/chemo), stress, insomnia, some gynecological issues
- Recovery: Stroke rehab and addiction support
What to expect
A consultation covers symptoms, history, and lifestyle. The procedure is usually well-tolerated and often relaxing. It’s generally safe when done by a licensed practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. It can be combined with conventional care.
Key difference from dry needling
- Acupuncture: Holistic, based on traditional Chinese medicine, used for a wide range of conditions.
- Dry needling: Modern technique focused on muscle pain and trigger points, typically done by physical therapists.
